Opportunity to Serve on Independent Redistricting Commission (Trustee Area 2)
The West Contra Costa Unified School District seeks applicants to serve on its Independent Redistricting Commission for a vacant seat representing Trustee Area 2.
In past school board elections, the District used “at-large” elections in which the District’s five Board members were elected by all voters within the District. The District Board is now elected through “by-trustee area” elections, where the District is divided into five trustee areas, and voters in each trustee area only elect one trustee, who must reside within that particular trustee area. Once a school district has moved to by-trustee area elections, the law requires the District’s map to be redrawn every ten years after the release of the federal census data. The Independent Redistricting Commission has been appointed to adopt a new trustee area map for the 2022 election, based on the recently released 2020 census data.
The Redistricting Commission held its first meeting on June 2, 2021, and has been meeting on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month since then. This is a volunteer position, which will last until around February of 2022. Thelton Henderson, a retired Senior United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, will select a resident of Trustee Area 2 to fill the vacant seat. All residents of Trustee Area 2 are eligible to apply, regardless of age or citizenship status. If you are interested in applying, or know anyone who might be interested, please fill out this application or nominate someone at redistrictingcommission@wccusd.net.
