Remembering Lupita, December 14, 2021
Dear WCCUSD Community:
I am writing to you to share some very unfortunate news. I am extremely saddened to share that a student passed away unexpectedly. Guadalupe “Lupita” Canchola, a 10-year-old, 4th-grade student at Grant Elementary School died on Saturday, December 4 from natural causes. Our sincere condolences go out to Lupita’s family and friends, and the Grant community.
Lupita was a bright, beloved young person with an equally bright future. Lupita attended Grant since preschool, and her two older siblings were also part of the Grant community and are alumni.
There has been misinformation shared about her cause of death that it is related to the Covid-19 vaccination. Her family informed us that she had not received a Covid-19 vaccination, so these rumors are false and should cease immediately. As a community, it is important to support Lupita’s family. Any rumors about her cause of death are hurtful and distressing to the family and school community at this time.
The death of a student is a very difficult situation that can generate high levels of stress and anxiety. We encourage you to talk to your child about their thoughts and feelings to help them work through grief or concerns. If you feel that your children need to speak with a counselor or another caring adult, please reach out to the administration at your school.
This is a difficult time, but I know we can count on one another for support as we fondly remember Lupita.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kenneth Chris Hurst
Superintendent
