HOW TO BECOME CERTIFICATED SUBSTITUTE IN WCCUSD

  • Thank you for your interest in Substitute Teaching with the West Contra Costa Unified School District. Please see the sequencing of our process below. If you have any further questions, please feel free to email rosalina.cabanayan@wccusd.net.

    1. Apply on www.edjoin.org, upload your resume, unofficial transcripts from all of your universities, two letters of recommendation, CBEST scores, or click HERE to view the other CTC-approved options to be used instead of a CBEST and TB clearance to the application.  If you cannot attach the necessary documents when submitting your application, you can always email them to rosalina.cabanayan@wccusd.net when you have received them.

    Here is the link  https://www.edjoin.org/Home/DistrictJobPosting/1422840

    1. Request OFFICIAL Transcripts from your BA/BS (undergrad) to be mailed, or electronic OFFICIAL can be sent directly to my email from your college (unofficial copies or previously opened transcripts will not be accepted). You will be notified when to order official transcripts.  All transcripts must be evaluated beforehand.
    2. (A) After your application is reviewed and references checked, you will be contacted to schedule an appointment to come to the HR Department for fingerprinting and processing. (WCCUSD requires our own set of fingerprinting that cannot be from other sources or districts. WCCUSD volunteer prints do not count for WCCUSD employment) Fingerprinting will be of no cost to you.

Students with 90+ semester units and Proof of meeting Basic Skills Requirement (BSR) can get an Emergency Substitute Teaching Permit for Prospective Teachers. CBEST is not required, BSR can be met through coursework or other tests (AP tests, ACT, SAT).

         (B) Once your fingerprint results come back clear, and if you do not already possess a permit or credential, you will be recommended to the CTC for a Teaching permit. Once recommended, you will be required to pay for this permit to complete the recommendation ($102.50 paid to CTC online).

Fee Waiver: The CTC announced a waiver of credentialing fees for initial applicants to substitute teaching (and many other teaching/school-based roles) through June 30, 2022. Here's the announcement and information, and the waiver is also highlighted on this page.

    1. Once you have submitted all the required hiring documents and possess a valid permit or credential, you will receive the information for the New Hire Orientation (A mandatory 4-hour PAID training). When completed, you may begin working as a substitute.

You cannot work or be placed on Payroll until all employment steps have been completed.

Thank you for your interest in working with WCCUSD, and we look forward to working with you.
