The West Contra Costa Unified School District schools and buildings are closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. To assist students, families, staff and the community we created this page that includes information and resources on Distance Learning (Phase 2 began Monday, April 13), student meals, other food options, internet access, coronavirus and community partner updates.

July 9 Return To School Town Hall Reminder
Today, as promised, I am releasing our framework for returning to school this fall. I hope that everyone can appreciate that school will not look the same when full-time instruction resumes on August 17.

July 2 Closure Update: Return 2 School Task Force Updates
A District task force of students, families, teachers, principals and District staff are working at a furious pace to create a plan of what school will look like for the 2020-221 school year. We will share a draft plan at a Town Hall meeting from 5:30-7 pm on Friday, July 10.

June 5 Closure Update: Last Day of School of an Unprecedented Year
Today is the last day of school and in most years, I could simply talk about graduations and the wonderful celebrations taking place. This year is different. The COVID-19 pandemic and civil protests have altered and changed society, education, and our communities.

We have started the process of working through various scenarios for the start of school. Whether we return to our classrooms in the fall, distance learning continues or some hybrid of the two, there are a lot of challenges that must be addressed and we will need your help in finding solutions.

May 22 Closure Update: Commencement Season, planning for multiple options for the 2020-21 school year; virtual school
Despite uncertainty, we know that students will need to learn and that we will need to offer services to support them and their families. So we are planning for next year. We have cross-departmental teams collaborating to imagine how instruction will be delivered under several different scenarios.

May 19 District Closure Update: New county guidance allows car-based graduations; locker, classroom clear out process out this week
On Friday, Contra Costa Health Services released new guidance that allows for car-based gatherings, which includes graduations. We are extremely relieved to finally have clear guidance that will allow the Class of 2020 to be acknowledged in person. Our high schools will hold car-based ceremonies for the Class of 2020 that comply with the new county guidelines.

May 15 Closure Update: End of year procedures, sobering state budget news
The Governor released his May Revision this week and we may have to reduce $26 million or more for the 2020-21 school year.

May 8 Closure Update: Temporary grading policy approved; close to a decision about Class of 2020 celebration
First, I would like to wish all of the mothers a Happy Mothers Day and Día de las Madres. Even though a normal celebration may not be possible due to the stay-at-home orders, I hope that you all find a time to celebrate the mothers in your life.

April 24: District Closure Update Joint Announcement on Grading Policy
Working together, the District and its partners developed a temporary grading system for Distance Learning to help us move forward during the school building closures due to COVID-19 pandemic.

April 21 Closure Update: Finalizing grading and attendance policies coming this week
In WCCUSD, we are starting the sixth week of the schools being closed due to the COVID-19 crisis and the second week of Distance Learning Phase 2. Despite the physical distance between teachers and students, there has been a lot of good work and engaging instruction taking place.

April 14 Closure Update: Thank you for your support. We are off and running with Distance Learning.
We will get through this COVID-19 crisis because there are so many examples of us coming together. Whether it's Richmond high media students producing their weekly news broadcast or the food services team and volunteers serving 28,000 meals per day or parents/families assisting us in the creation of a Distance Learning guide, we have worked together for every WCCUSD student.

April 12 Closure Update: Welcome Back; Distance Learning Begins
Welcome back. I hope you and your family are healthy and safe. Tomorrow WCCUSD's Phase 2 of Distance Learning begins. This is our opportunity to ensure that students continue to access engaging, empowering and challenging instruction even while they are physically separated from their school communities. This is a work in progress for everyone. Let's learn together and ensure all WCCUSD's students succeed.

April 8 News Release: Supper added to meal distribution locations
WCCUSD expanded its student meal program during the COVID-19 school closure, adding supper to the breakfast and lunch pick up. Meals can be picked up from 11 am to 1 pm Monday through Friday at 17 locations in the District.

April 3 School Closure Update: School buildings closed for rest of school year; Learning continues via distance learning
WCCUSD school buildings will not reopen this school year due to the COVID-19 outbreak. However, learning will continue via distance learning and will increase when we return April 13.
