Welcome to the 2020-21 school year! It has been quite the summer for us, and this school year begins Monday, Aug. 17 like no other year. Thanks to students, families, teachers, school principals, staff, and community partners, we begin the year with a community-driven virtual/distancing learning plan.

August 3 Return To School Update: Tentative Agreement Reached with Teachers Union
I am proud to report that the district and the bargaining unit representing teachers and other certificated staff reached a tentative agreement on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Friday evening that sets expectations for educators and outlines the distance learning environment for students and families for when instruction resumes on August 17.

State Postpones Athletics Until at Least December
As anticipated the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and North Coast Section (NCS) delayed the start date for athletics until at least December due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

July 20: Return To School Framework Submitted to Contra Costa County Office of Education
I hope that you are having a safe and restful summer. Today, as promised, we submitted the Back to School Vision & Framework to the Contra Costa County Office of Education. As we shared on July 9, the 2020-21 school year will begin in a distance learning format when instruction resumes on Monday, August 17.

July 2 Closure Update: Return 2 School Task Force Updates
A District task force of students, families, teachers, principals and District staff are working at a furious pace to create a plan of what school will look like for the 2020-221 school year. We will share a draft plan at a Town Hall meeting on Friday, July 10.

Board Votes to End Contracts with Police Agencies, Shift Funds to Support African American Students
The West Contra Costa Unified School District Board of Education on Wednesday night unanimously voted to end contract services with local police agencies and transfer the money to efforts supporting African American students.

Public Hearing: Special Education Local Plan/Annual Service & Budget Plan
WCCUSD will host a public hearing at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, June 24 via Zoom about its Special Education Local Plan/Annual Service and Budget Plan as required by by AB 602.

June 5 Closure Update: Last Day of School of an Unprecedented Year
Today is the last day of school and in most years, I could simply talk about graduations and the wonderful celebrations taking place. This year is different. The COVID-19 pandemic and civil protests have altered and changed society, education, and our communities.

This weekend has been a difficult one for our community and for America at large. Over the past weeks, I felt ill when I read the stories of Ahmaud Aubrey and Breonna Taylor. The image of George Floyd dying with an officer’s knee on his neck was beyond sickening.

Despite uncertainty, we know that students will need to learn and that we will need to offer services to support them and their families. We have several teams working together to create multiple plans for how instruction might look next year.

May 19 District Closure Update: New county guidance allows car-based graduations; locker, classroom clear out process out this week
On Friday, Contra Costa Health Services released new guidance that allows for car-based gatherings, which includes graduations. We are extremely relieved to finally have clear guidance that will allow the Class of 2020 to be acknowledged in person. Our high schools will hold car-based ceremonies for the Class of 2020 that comply with the new county guidelines.

Kennedy High School Students, Fab Lab Recreate History
To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11, students at Kennedy High School and the Fab Lab were asked by former Myth Buster's co-host Adam Savage to help recreate the command module hatch from the mission.

Freedom School Comes To WCCUSD
Freedom School has come to West Contra Costa Unified School District for its first year. The Children's Defense Fund's Freedom School provides a safe, fun, and fulfilling learning experience for 50 children from Stege and Nystrom Elementary Schools.

For the past five years, Marcella Jamerson and the Wilson Elementary School community have concluded Black History Month with a professional panel and this year may have been one of their best with former Warriors' Center Adonal Foyle and a judge, doctor, fitness instructor and business owner, author and former tech industry executive, and correctional investigator all sharing their stories.

Living History: King Elementary School Recreates Freedom March
King Elementary hosted a Freedom March on March 27 and this is how Principal Joey Sundberg summed up the day: "Today was one of those days you live for as an educator," Sundberg said following the march. "We made history live and gave kids a path to have their voices heard."

The California Department of Education (CDE) released a new version of the California School Dashboard with reports that are simpler to read. The dashboard (www.caschooldashboard.org) is an online tool created by the CDE to provide information about K–12 schools and districts.

At the end of the 2017-18 school year, the West Contra Costa Unified School District’s Board adopted Roadmap 2022, an ambitious plan to ensure that more students succeed and are prepared for college and beyond. Part of that plan included compensation increases for employees and a commitment to reduce the budget to fund the increases.

UPDATE: NCS Postpones Kennedy, ECHS Playoff Football Games, Girls Tennis Tournament Due to Air Quality
The NCS announced that El Cerrito's Division III playoff game and the NCS Girls doubles match featuring Richmond High School scheduled for today have been postponed. The Gauchos will host Miramonte on Saturday, Nov. 17. No make up date for the Oilers girls doubles tennis match has been announced.

KRON 4 News Honors King Elementary School Teacher
Julie Nesnansky, a special education at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, was recognized as KRON 4 News' Teacher of the Week for the week of October 22. Ms. Nesnansky has been teaching the West Contra Costa Unified School District for over 30 years and focuses on students with autism.

The Biomechs finished sixth out of 60 teams at the First Robotics Competition, Silicon Valley Regional. The team went 7-4 at the two-day competition and competed against teams sponsored by NASA, Google, and Cisco.

Hercules senior finishes 4th at state cross country championship
Ryan Cutter made Hercules High School history, finishing fourth in the CIF State Cross Country Championship Division IV Boys race on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at Woodward Park in Fresno. Ryan's finish is the highest place a WCCUSD athlete has had at the state cross country championship in at least 12 years.

The Board of Education will consider approval of a contract with Leadership Associates, the firm it selected to conduct the search for the District's next superintendent, at its meeting on Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016. The Board and staff from Leadership Associates will also begin framing the superintendent search process with a discussion beginning at 12:30 p.m. The superintendent search discussion will take place after the Board discusses the Facilities Master Plan and the District's 2016-17 budget.

Cautionary Tale to Warn De Anza HS Students about Dangers of Drinking, Driving
De Anza High School students will witness the sobering consequences of driving under the influence during a two-day event that will feature simulated collisions and rescues, a trial, and a mock funeral for two of their classmates.
