Athletic Update from December 1, 2020
Due to the continued surge in COVID-19 infections, California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), has postponed all athletic events until after January 1, 2021, at the earliest. Therefore, WCCUSD has officially cancelled all athletic tryouts and conditioning until further notice.

Athletics and Facilities District Update (August 21, 2020)
When the smoke clears from the wildfires, you will see some students using our fields to prepare for their upcoming athletic seasons. Even though CIF has postponed interscholastic athletic competition until the winter, teams are allowed to work out if they follow strict health and safety guidelines. All students and staff taking part are following all health care protocols in place. We are excited that the student-athletes will be able to engage in some limited practices and look forward to the day when the health conditions allow for a more robust set of outdoor activities. For the time being, all district field and play facilities are closed to the public. We do not have the capacity to monitor and maintain those facilities being used by the public at this time. We hope that we will be able to open up our outdoor facilities to members of the community soon.
We believe we have made great strides in ensuring technology and access for our students and staff as well as rigorous and robust instruction. If you have a question or concern, please use the teacher office hours or the family hour on Friday to confer with teachers or school leadership. As always, feel free to reach out to me if you have any other concerns, questions or general feedback (positive or negative) as we need to hear what is working and what is a challenge.
Thank you again for a great start to the school year and for your patience as we find solutions to the challenges that we have faced.
In Partnership,
Matthew Duffy Superintendent

Dear De Anza Community,
Given the current circumstances we are experiencing, I hope you and your families are well.
On Monday, July 20, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and North Coast Section (NCS) released the new athletic calendar for our upcoming 2020-2021 athletic season.
De Anza and other high school in California normally participates in three athletic seasons: fall, winter, and spring. However, as we continue to endure COVID-19, the CIF and NCS have reduced these three seasons to two seasons: fall and spring. This year's fall season will begin on December 14, 2020. Spring season will start on various dates (based on the sport) in 2021. (Please see the chart below.)
Although the start dates have changed, there is no reduction in total number of games an athletic team can play, and the NCS section and CIF state championship games also remain on the calendar.
Undoubtedly, this new calendar will present some challenges for everyone, but please note that the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of California’s student-athletes were strongly considered as it was developed. I will also continue to work closely with our coaches and student-athletes to address any issue which may arise.
In addition to the calendar adjustment, there was one other noteworthy change.
- CIF Bylaw 600-605 Suspended for 2020-2021 School Year - This bylaw prohibits students from participating on a club or AAU team while at the same time participating in the same sport at the high school level. For example, a student-athlete is not allowed to participate on an AAU basketball team and participate on his high school team at the same time. With the change in the calendar, this rule has been suspended, and student-athletes are now allowed to participate on both teams.
As we begin the journey of this new school year, it’s for sure there may be more changes and challenges. I encourage you to continuing checking the De Anza High School and CIFNCS.org webpages for more information.
With the new information released by the CIF/ NCS, WCCUSD has adjusted how we will be moving forward with athletics in our school district.
- July 24th conclusion of the return to activity Pilot for conditioning
- July 25th- August 16th (Dead Period) no on-campus activities -students and coaches may maintain communication and meet in a virtual setting only. This communication/meetings can include virtual asynchronous workout ideas and synchronous online sessions as they see fit.
- August 17th First Day Of School Year (distance learning), Student-athletes can begin “ Summertime activities" per the CIF/NCS Calendar. Please refer to the De Anza High School website for more specific information.
- December 14th first official day of fall practice – refer to chart below for a list of sports included.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at Lawrence Smith Athletic Director De Anza High School email lsmith@wccusd.net
Thank you and GO DONS!
