Middle College Named Gold Ribbon School
Middle College Named Gold Ribbon School
RICHMOND--Middle College High School is one of just 275 middle and high schools throughout the state of California being honored under the Gold Ribbon Schools Awards Program, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced this week.
Middle
College was recognized for its collaboration with Contra Costa College to
create an early college high school program, which prepares students for
college by increasing their exposure to college courses.
"We are
extremely proud of the work being done at Middle College to prepare students
for success in college," Superintendent Matthew Duffy said. "Now, we need to
replicate the positive actions taking place at Middle College and expand
opportunities for more students to experience the same levels of success as
their peers at Middle College."
Middle
College High School has a graduation rate of 100 percent and 90.5 percent of
students graduate eligible to attend a University of California or California
State University campus.
"I am
honored that Middle College High School is being recognized for its success in
preparing students for college," Principal Finy Prak said. "It is a privilege
to be able to serve students in this capacity. Without the positive
relationship that exists with Contra Costa College, the District and the
community, this program would not be possible. Without a strong commitment from
students, teachers, parents and staff, this program would not be a success."
According to
the California Department of Education, the selected schools represent examples
of excellent teaching, learning, and collaborating. They also have highly
successful school climate efforts, ranging from real time conflict resolution
to positive behavior intervention.
"These
terrific schools are leading the way in embracing our new rigorous academic
standards and showing others how to help students succeed on their way to 21st
century careers and college," Torlakson said. "I look forward to travelling the
state to honor these schools and to help share the programs, methods, and
techniques that are working."
Last year,
elementary schools were acknowledged. The District had 13 elementary schools
receive the award.
The
California Gold Ribbon Schools Award was created to honor schools in place of
the California Distinguished Schools Program, which is on hiatus while
California creates new assessment, accountability, and continuous improvement
systems. This year, 477 middle schools and high schools applied.
Schools
applied for the award based on a model program or practice their school has
adopted that includes standards-based activities, projects, strategies, and
practices that can be replicated by other local educational agencies.
The Gold
Ribbon Awards recognize California schools that have made gains in implementing
the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of
Education. These include the California Standards for English Language Arts and
Mathematics, California English Language Development Standards, and Next
Generation Science Standards.
