Friday, April 30 Superintendent Update: Fall for 100% In-Person, Middle College Recognition, Teacher Appreciation Week, Covid-19 Vaccine Appointments
Friday, April 30, 2021
Happy Friday WCCUSD Community,
We had such a great week with so many schools and individuals recognized. Middle College started the celebrations after it was named a California Distinguished School on Tuesday.
Principal Finy Prak, her team, and the students and families were recognized for their work in improving or maintaining several areas on the California State Dashboard, including college readiness, graduation, and suspension rates.
Here is what Principal Prak had to say about the Panthers’ recognition.
“I was honestly surprised by the announcement,” Prak said. “I am extremely proud of my students, staff, and community. They never cease to amaze me. I also found out (Tuesday) that MCHS is one of only eight schools to be recognized in Contra Costa County and the sole school to be recognized in West Contra Costa USD. I am grateful that we get to rep WCCUSD on a positive note.”
Wednesday, De Anza notified us that its JROTC Academic Team of Alan Yan, Lionel Verano, Emily Ortiz, and Nicolas Yan qualified for the 2021 U.S. Air Force JROTC Academic Bowl Championship on July 23-27 in Washington D.C.
We also found out that Diablo Magazine featured Pinole Valley’s Kevin Hernandez and the Spartans’ Earth Team for their work to combat pollution.
Congratulations to Middle College, De Anza, and Pinole Valley.
The celebration continues next week with Teacher Appreciation Week. Please be sure to share and show WCCUSD’s teachers love and affection next week. We have a few social media appreciations and celebrations planned and will need your help. So, please be on the lookout for that.
This week, the Board also voted that all schools would return to 100 percent in-person learning for the 2021-2022 school year that begins August 16. I appreciate the discussion at Wednesday’s meeting, and I agree that we cannot go back to the education system we had pre-pandemic. Our district has been working diligently to change the fundamental school experience for students. Our work is to continue to think not just about more resources but about the experience we want WCCUSD students to have as learners every day. This week, I shared my thoughts about capturing the many innovations that took place during the pandemic in this piece published on the Next Generation Learning Challenges website.
From advisory to office hours to grading, we made many adjustments on behalf of students. We must remain as learners to transform the school learning experience for students. The only way we will grow, and change is to continue to learn!
Lastly, before we go, Contra Costa County Health Services started walk-in Covid-19 vaccine clinics in Richmond this week at two locations. You can find those locations here. The county also has several appointments available at Contra Costa College, the Richmond Auditorium, and West County Nursing. You can check for those appointments here.
Have a great weekend.
In community,
Matthew Duffy
