  • Work Experienced Spartans

Since the start of this school year 147 of your fellow students chose to join the workforce. Congratulations to those which accomplished their first employment; but not forgetting those who continued to balance work and studies and adding additional work experiences to their resume. The Work Experience Desk attempted to provide a vast number of employment opportunities basically throughout the Pinole Valley - Interstate 80 corridor.and/or a 25 mile radius within the school. It was certainly a pleasure to have witnessed the student's 'excited anticipation' of going through the process of receiving a certified work permit. Kudos to those fellow students 18 years of age that may not have needed a permit and added to the total joining the workforce.

  • Artist of the Day: Jenna Phillips

Jenna is proof that "practice makes perfect!" Jenna found her medium of choice early in the year. She is passionate about collage and has gotten to be an expert at it. On the left, she collaged her sketchbook creating unity with its repeating forms. The last picture on the right, demonstrates how she has filled her sketchbook with this new found passion. In her Anatomical Heart painting (center), she collaged the water and moon using tiny pieces of magazines that she meticulously glued to the canvas, piece by piece. She was inspired by the Taylor Swift lyric , "In the Winter, in the icy outdoor pool when you jumped in first, I went in too. I'm with you even if it makes me blue."

  • Artist of the Day: Valentina Rueda

The “ Homage to a Master Photographer” photos are just starting to come in. Students were to choose an image they liked and then recreate it with their own touch. Valentina Rueda chose Ralph Gibson whose photos are best known for building narrative meaning through contextualization and surreal juxtaposition. I have included his photos and Valentina’s so you can see how the creative process unfolded . It involved a lot of feathering and contrast adjustment as well directing her models who just happened to be her mom dad.

  • Survey says....

People want to know what our students know and what they think. Friday, we have a special schedule to accomodate that desire. First all students will take a basic science assessment to produce data to confirm how much knowledge has been retained or offered. Then it is everyone to take the California Healthy Kids Survey which was interrupted by the pandemic, but back again to provide useful insight about students attitudes about the school and their role in it. And if that is not enough, we have a short three questionaire about attitudes about technoology. We look forward to hearing what our kids have to say!

  • Artist of the Day: Adam Ngo

The prompt of the day was shattered and Adam Ngo figured he could slice in a layer of broken glass and create a mind-blowing self-portrait. The great thing about working with broken glass in photoshop (Besides not getting cut) is that you can adapt it any way you like by cutting out slices in the right places often resulting in a truly dramatic portrait like this one. This is Adam's return trip as Artist of the Day and we ought to have a special wing for multi-time awardees. We are in fact, hosting our Senior Awards Night on Thursday June 2 and we may see some of these names again.

  • Choir Owns the Stage

It was a night of musical magic Wednesday on the Pinole Valley High School stage. We had the choir, the piano classes and the Encore Dance company put on a rousing last performance of the year. We saw a culmination of a year's worth of hard work and then for the cherry on top; a number of solo and duos had their debuts last night including Joe Verzoza and Emily King last night with their lovely harmonies. We then saw Encore Dance take center stage and send the crowd home in style. Thanks to everyone for making this show sing.

  • Artist of the Day: Quin Savage

Quin sees what you are doing there--Students are working on the Principle of art : Rhythm. One way to achieve Rhythm is by grouping similar yet slightly different elements in a work of art. The repetition of similar elements also causes your eye to move, achieving the principle: movement. Quin uses collaged eyes photographed at different angles and cut from magazines and then added to the “beat” by adding the circular googly eyes. The wavy way she cut the sections creates a “fun house” effect.

  • Still staying diligent to fight COVID

There are so many things going on in the next few weeks that we don't want to be the one who msses out, or causes somebody at school to miss out, or gets someone at home sick and unable to particpate in any event. And some of these events have the capacity to not be great in terms of social distancing--singing yearbooks, seeing performces and prom, graduation practices and others may inadvertantly be super spreader potentialities. We are saying continue to use caution, to be as protected as you can be, and do your part to wash hands, get tested and build good habits, so that you can be part of all the events and activities we have to offer (and of course, being able to fully attend school)

  • Physics is a Go

wThe physics classes were the place to be on Tuesday where we saw what simple devices do that work on Physics elements. Today we learned that the waves of the slinky do something very much like sound and light waves. Who knew? And then downstairs in the sunlight, we saw the physics students holding glass objects to see which ones would create a rainbow. And once the visuals were evident asking why other glass shapes did not have the same effect. Tune in tomorrow to learn more
