Safety Update After an Incident Near King Elementary School
May 11, 2021
Dear WCCUSD Community,
I am writing to inform you about a concerning incident the King Elementary School community experienced on Friday, May 7.
An abandoned van with graffiti on it was discovered across the street from the school with the threat “School Shooting May 26” spray-painted on the side. King’s Principal Joey Sundberg immediately contacted the Richmond Police Department and the District’s administration team members.
We are working with the Richmond police, who are actively investigating the incident. The safety and well-being of students, families, and staff are our top priority. In an abundance of caution, we have closed King for in-person instruction for the rest of the week. Students participating in the in-person instruction have returned to Distance Learning.
Principal Sundberg and her team worked to notify the King community about the incident and the shift back to Distance Learning over the previous days.
If you or your student have any information about the incident, please contact the Richmond Police Department at 510-233-1214.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact my team or me. If we learn additional information about the incident, we will let you know as soon as possible.
Thank you and have a good evening.
In community,
Matthew Duffy
Superintendent
