Friday May 7 Superintendent Update: Appreciations, Celebrations, and Graduations

En Español

Friday, May 7

Dear WCCUSD Community,

Happy Friday. It was fun to appreciate and celebrate teachers and the nutrition services teams this week. Thursday, we celebrated this year’s teaching excellence winners Richmond High School’s Laura Garriguez and Carlo Juntilla, Madera Elementary School’s Molly Wahl, and DeJean Middle School’s Christina Ferry at the Ed Fund’s annual Soaring to Excellence Awards.

Thank you to all the principals that shared with us their favorite teachers and teaching moments this week. The celebrations continue this month with:

  • National School Nurses Day, Wednesday, May 12
  • Day of the Teacher next week, Wednesday, May 12
  • Classified School Employee Week, May 17
  • Graduations:
  • Reclassification Ceremony, 6 p.m. Monday, May 24 via Facebook Live
  • African American Students of Honor, 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 25 via Facebook Live
  • Employee Celebration, 4 p.m. Thursday, June 3, also on Facebook Live

Finally, I have two notes about SBAC and the last day of school.

Students in grades 2nd through 8th and 11th grade will take the STAR Reading and STAR Math assessments this year instead of the SBAC. 11th-grade students who want to take the SBAC for EAP (Early Assessment Program) credit will have a chance in late June. Eleventh-grade families will receive information on how to sign up to take this exam if they wish to do so.  That communication will also include other ways to qualify for EAP-a program that allows students in Community College to bypass remedial courses.

Lastly, the last day of school is Wednesday, June 9. There was an outdated calendar on our website that showed the incorrect date. We removed the wrong calendar, and again the last day of school is Wednesday, June 9.

Thank you, and have a great weekend.

Matthew Duffy
