Dear Chavez Families,

My name is Matthew Sloan, and I am excited for another year of leading our wonderful community of students, parents, and staff members at Chavez Elementary. I have over fifteen years of experience in education, with the last eight being in elementary school leadership here at Chavez.

As your former vice principal and now as your principal, I work to design and maintain systems and structures at our school that are supportive of our students, teachers, family members and community. I am thrilled when I think of all of the great things our students will accomplish this year as they grow academically, socially, and emotionally. We have some exciting changes taking place this year, all of which serve to benefit our students and their academic growth in reading and in math.

Students in every grade will be working with a research-based supplemental English Language Arts curriculum called Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA); students in our bilingual classrooms will be working with a parallel curriculum called Caminos that covers the same stories, content and standards. Both of these programs are grounded in the science of reading and we are excited to see the positive impact this will have on growing our students’ reading and writing abilities. 

For mathematics, we will continue to leverage Zearn as our math curriculum; our scholars did amazing work on Zearn last year- Let’s keep it up! As you know, communication is key to a successful school year; please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or to the office if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas. We are here to support you and your child every step of the way! At Chavez, we all work hard to create and maintain a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment where every child can be successful and thrive. Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of educating your child. We are excited to see the learning, the growth, the fun, and the accomplishments that this year will bring.
