November 13 Friday Update: Immunization Drive, Redistrict Commission, Reopening plans
November 13, 2020
Dear WCCUSD Community,
Happy Friday. Yesterday, we received exciting news as Safeway, the Hill Physicians Medical Group and Blue Cross Blue Shield partnered with us to conduct a massive drive-thru Immunization and Food Give Away Drive next Thursday, Nov. 19 at the District administration building. The drive-thru clinic is from 9 am to 4 pm.
For the past six weeks, we have heard from principals, teachers and district nurses about the difficulty for some families to get the required immunizations for their children. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of clinics were forced to alter their hours and availability leaving a large portion of WCCUSD’s community unable to receive the necessary immunizations. Middle School families, in particular seventh graders, were hardest hit.
Now, thanks to Safeway, Hill Physicians Medical Group, Blue Cross Blue Shield and a number of District departments and schools, more than 700 students have the opportunity to receive the immunizations at NO COST TO THEM.
The District’s community engagement team and the School Community Outreach Workers began contacting the more than 700 families to schedule them for Thursday’s immunization drive. If you know a WCCUSD student in need of the required immunization please share this news with them.
In addition, Barbara Jellision and the Food Services team are planning a massive food giveaway at the meal pick up locations. As an extra incentive, families receiving the immunizations will also receive a free turkey and a week’s worth of food for children 18 years and younger.
The Ed Fund has also purchased 250 $50 Safeway gift cards that we will give away during the immunization drive. Safeway is also giving every family that gets their student immunized a 10% off coupon for their next grocery purchase at Safeway.
I am proud and thankful to lead a district that does everything possible to serve students. This public-private partnership is going to help more than 700 students stay healthy and safe. We are already talking with Hill Physicians Medical Group about other opportunities to partner, including teaming up on social emotional and mental health. So please, let WCCUSD families know that we will be contacting them about immunizations and stay tuned for more exciting partnerships.
Before we go, I also want to mention that we are continuing to work on a reopening plan that would happen only when it is safe to do so. Currently, Contra Costa County was moved back into the Red tier because of an increase in COVID-19 cases. We were one of 11 counties this week that was moved back into a more restrictive tier. We will continue to plan for reopening, but know that there is no defined timeline for that to occur and will happen only when it is safe to do so.
Finally, we still need applications for the Redistricting Commission, which will use 2020 Census data to review and possibly revise the boundaries for the five Board of Trustee Area for future elections. The applications and more information can be found at www.wccusd.net/redistrictingcommission.
Thank you again for reading and please remember to practice social/physical distancing and continue to wear a mask when you are out and about.
