Principal's Message

Greetings future Sylvester Greenwood Academy students.

My name is Phil Johnson and it is with great excitement that I address you as the principal at this school. I am honored to have the opportunity to work with you and I am excited to start your journey here at our school together. I am dedicated to ensuring your success.

Some of you may know me as the principal at Kennedy. I have worked for the district for 15 years, 11 as an administrator. I was also a police officer for 20 years and retired as a Sgt. With that being said, I believe in following the districts rules and policies. I’m less tolerant of what I call the Okie Doke. If you want to be here, I will bend over backwards to support you. If not, you will return back to your home school.

Distance Learning officially started on Monday, Aug 17th. The school day is from 10 am – 3:00pm. Students will start off the day with a 25-minute homeroom and have 3 (55) minute classes to complete the school day. Two periods before lunch and one period after lunch. On Mondays and Wednesday, students will attend their 1st, 2nd and 3rd period classes, and on Tuesdays & Thursdays, they will attend 4th, 5th & 6th periods. Lunch is at noon. Teachers will have office hours daily from 9:30 -10am and 2:00 -2:30pm. Students will have the opportunity to check in with teachers during office hours to answer question or for classroom support.

Fridays are reserved for Wellness. Families can check in with teachers from 9-10 am. Students will have to log into their homeroom at 10am for Wellness exercises. Making sure our students are well, attend all of their classes, and stay engaged is our major goal.

Attendance at Greenwood Academy is strictly voluntary and the privilege can be revoked at any time. Please take the time to review district policies regarding the dress code and classroom behavior. They will be strictly enforced during distance learning to ensure student safety. It is important for everyone to be familiar with these policies to prevent any misunderstandings about what is acceptable while in the classroom setting. Our goal is to keep students engaged for the entire instructional period.

It is the top priority of our staff to provide a safe and healthy learning environment for our students. Toward this end, any incidents of violence; intimidation; drugs or alcohol possession, distribution, or intoxication; and sexual harassment will not be tolerated. Students exhibiting these negative behaviors will receive a consequence. It is of paramount importance that these behaviors be addressed to ensure a safe, supportive learning environment. Student growth academically and socially is our mission.

The school will employ progressive disciplinary action with all students found in violation of district policies. This may include counseling up to suspension. Students will be given every opportunity to correct their behavior. Please understand that these policies are not open for interpretation or debate. These are simply basic guidelines that will promote a safe and healthy learning environment at our school.

Thank you for your support with these important safety measures. Working together I know we can make this a successful year for all of the students at Sylvester Greenwood Academy.

Thank you.

 Phillip Johnson
