Community Update: March17 Schools Open Thursday for Distance Learning Pick Up
March 17, 2020
Dear WCCUSD Families,
I hope that you and your family are positively coping with the most recent shelter in place order from the county. District employees and community partners are working to provide you with resources to help you get through the next three weeks.
We are receiving daily coronavirus updates from the county and state and those directions have been guiding our actions. The latest message includes guidance regarding essential travel and gatherings that are allowable as part of the Contra Costa County Shelter in Place Order. The order allows travel and gatherings for the purpose of distributing resources for distance learning.
In light of this new information and in order to meet the needs of WCCUSD students, parents, and staff, we are planning to open all schools for a three-hour window from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. this Thursday, March 19, 2020. Students and families will have the opportunity to pick up distance learning materials such as Chromebooks with chargers and work packets/workbooks/books. Unfortunately, the district is out of wifi hotspots at this time. You can use your mobile phone to create a hotspot and Comcast is offering free internet access that you may be able to utilize. We are also researching additional options for Internet access.
Because we are doing our best to comply with the county’s shelter in place order, please do not show up to pick up forgotten lunchboxes or jackets or socialize. While we are making this opportunity available, please follow social distancing guidelines if you need to come to school. This means that you should stay six feet away from other people and do not attend if you are sick or have any flu-like symptoms.
Allowances for the purpose of distributing resources needed for distance learning is specified:
For the purposes of this Order, “Essential Businesses” means...xi. Educational institutions—including public and private K-12 schools, colleges, and universities—for purposes of facilitating distance learning or performing essential functions, provided that social distancing of six-feet per person is maintained to the greatest extent possible.
“Essential Travel” includes travel for any of the following purposes. Individuals engaged in any Essential Travel must comply with all Social Distancing Requirements...iii. Travel to or from educational institutions for purposes of receiving materials for distance learning, for receiving meals, and any other related services.
Information about community resources available during the closures is available on the District website page on School Closures. This resource is being updated regularly and additional services added as we know of them.
Thank you again for your patience and support.
