WCCUSD Board of Trustees to call a special meeting on Thursday, September 30.
Good evening WCCUSD Community,
After listening extensively to WCCUSD families, employees, and legal advisors, I have asked the WCCUSD Board of Trustees to call a special meeting on Thursday, September 30. Trustees will discuss a possible Covid-19 vaccine mandate that reflects the desire of the WCCUSD community to keep our school safe during the pandemic. The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at DeJean Middle (limited capacity to 100 people) or virtually on Zoom.
This is an important discussion for the WCCUSD community, and I encourage everyone to join the meeting. Public comment occurs at the beginning of the meeting with each participant allotted two minutes to speak.
I have called for three resolutions in regards to a Covid-19 vaccine mandate:
- Employee and Volunteer Vaccination Mandate: to ensure that employees and vendors are vaccinated.
- Student Vaccination Mandate, including adult school students: all students eligible for the vaccine must be vaccinated.
- Athletes must be vaccinated within 30 days of the passage of the mandate.
- Students have 45 days to receive their first vaccination dose. The day a student turns 12, or becomes eligible, they have 30 days to get their first dose.
- Partner organizations or direct service staff Vaccination mandate: individuals that have contact with students must be vaccinated.
To prepare for the meeting, we consulted with the District’s legal team and listened to the feedback from students, teachers, principals, school and district staff, and the community to develop the three resolutions. Last week, county health voiced its support for a vaccine mandate in WCCUSD. Officials from county health will be present at the meeting to answer questions about the Covid-19 vaccine.
As a district, we have a number of Covid-19 safety strategies to help prevent the spread of the disease and keep students and staff safe. One of those strategies is a recommendation from Contra Costa County Health (CCCH) and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) for those individuals eligible to get the Covid-19 vaccine. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also currently recommends that everyone 12 years and older should get a Covid-19 vaccination to help protect against the virus.
During the Covid-19 pandemic information and conditions have changed as we learned more about the virus. To help assist with some of the questions we created this FAQ (www.wccusd.net/CovidFAQ). We are also tracking the number of confirmed positive cases at each via the Covid-19 Dashboard, which is updated Monday through Friday at 5 p.m. and located on the District’s website www.wccusd.net.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kenneth Chris Hurst
Superintendent
