December 4 Friday Update: English Learner Parent Summit, Superintendent Search Survey
December 4, 2020
Dear WCCUSD community,
Welcome back. I hope you were able to rest and recharge over the November recess. We have come back to an already busy but essential schedule.
This Saturday starting at 10 am, the District is hosting the English Learner Parent Summit on Zoom. You can join the summit here (https://wccusd.zoom.us/j/91300847159).
The District’s English Learner Achievement and Literacy team, Multilingual District Advisory Committee (MDAC), and Family and Community Engagement team are co-hosting the event. The summit includes a series of workshops.
The workshops are:
- Technology tips for families
- How to support literacy
- English Language development
- Reclassification process
- Special Education and English Learners
Xilonin Cruz-Gonzalez, the Deputy Director of Californians Together, will provide the keynote address. Please spread the word about the summit and encourage families to attend, especially English Learner families.
We also took an important next step for the District as the Superintendent Search Survey launched on Monday. We need everyone’s voice to ensure that we get the qualities and characteristics of the next superintendent right. The survey is available in English and Spanish and closes on Thursday, Dec. 10.
We need families, students, staff, and the community to take part. You can access the survey in English (bit.ly/suptsurveyenglish) and Spanish (bit.ly/suptsearchspnsh). Please take a moment to complete the survey and then share it with your friends and network.
Finally, as we return, the COVID-19 presence and cases continue to climb throughout the Bay Area. Remember to follow the public health guidelines around physical/social distancing and wear a mask when you are out and about. I know this is a difficult time and has been since our world changed back in March. If we do our part now, we can get back to in-person instruction at some point in the future.
As a district, we do not have a timetable for a return, but we continue to work on a return to school plan. We hope to share more details when we return from winter break. In the meantime, we must do all we can to follow the public health guidelines.
Lastly, thank you to everyone who helped promote, publicize, and fill out an application for the Redistricting Commission. We are in the process of reviewing the applications to ensure they meet the guidelines. We will then send the applications to retired U.S. District Court for Northern California Judge Thelton Henderson. Henderson was the first African American attorney for the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice, and he will select the commission members.
Enjoy the weekend, stay safe, and please follow the public health guidelines.
In community,
Matthew Duffy
Superintendent
