October 30 Friday Update: Inside a Learning Suite at Michelle Obama School; Stay Safe this Weekend
October 30, 2020
Happy Friday Community,
WCCUSD had a number of exciting events happen this week led by the virtual grand opening of Michelle Obama School, WCCUSD’s newest school with a new name. More about the grand opening in the video below.
We also had more encouraging news about COVID-19 in Contra Costa County as the county moved from the Red-tier status to the Orange-tier, allowing more business and venues to open and expand occupancy.
While the change in county COVID-19 status is encouraging news, as a District we still need to meet a number of benchmarks to consider reopening for in-person instruction. WCCUSD’s Board of Education is scheduled to discuss reopening at the Wednesday, Nov. 4 board meeting that begins at 6:30 via Zoom. NO decision has been made about reopening, nor has any reopening date been announced or discussed.
Please continue to complete the Multipurpose Family Income Forms. The forms are an important source of funding for a majority of WCCUSD’s schools. We need every family regardless of income and free and reduced priced lunch status to complete the form. The forms support a number of programs. Please make sure you help your school and complete the form.
Saturday marks Halloween and Dia de los Muertos is Sunday. They will be one like no other that we have experienced. Please follow the County Health guidelines on Halloween, Trick or Treating and Dia de los Muertos. The guidelines can be found here. Help ensure that we continue to improve the County’s COVID-19 status and follow the guidelines.
Lastly, Tuesday is Election Day. Please VOTE. There are a number of essential items on the ballot, including Proposition 15 which will directly help schools and cities.
Once you have voted, fill out an application to serve on the Redistricting Commission. Following the November 3 Election, WCCUSD’s Trustee Area boundaries will need to be reviewed and possibly revised using the 2020 Census data. The commission will lead this effort.
We received an extension for applications until after the Thanksgiving break. Please consider serving and fill out an application. We need one representative from each of the five Trustee Areas and two people from outside of WCCUSD boundaries but live in Contra Costa County. Applications are available here.
Thank you for reading and watching. Enjoy the weekend and continue to follow the county health guidelines and to also wear a mask when out and about.

Matthew Duffy
