African American Students of Honors Celebration 2022
 This year's ceremony takes place on Thursday, May 19 (Malcolm X's birthday) at the Contra Costa College Stadium from 6 pm-7:30 pm. Due to the unpredictability of the COVID-19 situation this year, while planning, the event is being held outdoors and will recognize those students in grades 7-12 that have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher throughout the school year.
Elementary students are being recognized by receiving certificates from their school sites. Elementary teachers and administrators have been asked to let the OAASA know which of ten categories is applicable for each of their Black/African American students. Each category is associated with a prominent Black-figure and all the certificates will have a color picture of the person on the certificate.
The certificates for elementary students are Barack Obama for Leadership, Harriet Tubman for Safety, Benjamin Banneker for Math and Science, Stacey Abrams for Responsibility, Colin Kaepernick for Respect, Phillis Wheatley for English Language Arts, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. for Kindness, Serena Williams for Effort, Imhotep for Academic Excellence, and Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune for Ready to Learn.

National Teacher Appreciation Day
National Teacher Appreciation Day, also known as National Teacher Day, recognizes dedicated educators across the country. As part of Teacher Appreciation Week, the celebration takes place on the Tuesday of the first full week in May each year.
The National Education Association describes National Teacher Day “as a day for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives.”
Teachers play a critical role in educating and shaping our children, the future leaders of our country. These kind, patient, hard-working, dedicated, and understanding professionals help mold our children and guide them in positive directions. We entrust our children with teachers, and they affect their lives daily.
No matter where we are in life, a teacher influenced us. They continue to impact our lives every day, too! When we meet new employees with a wealth of skills and abilities, a teacher helped shaped them. Every new business owner, doctor, engineer, or nurse can name a teacher who inspired them. Every one of us has at least one teacher in mind who encouraged and motivated us during our education.

Celebrate CSEW May 15–21, 2022
Each May, California salutes the important contributions of classified school employees during Classified School Employee Week (CSEW). This year we are celebrating the theme, “We are Classified! We Bring it Every Day!”
We are essential. We’re united. And we’re strong.
Online and on-campus, we’re behind the scenes, on the front lines, in the classroom.
We make it happen, for our teachers/academic staff, administrators, students, and communities.
From the first day of preschool to the last day of community college, with an associate’s degree in hand, we keep California education moving forward. Our patience has been tested. We’ve remained resilient. We’ve fallen down and helped each other stand up. And yet, we continue to face challenges, unlike anything we’ve seen in our lifetimes.
But we will face them, together. With a smile, some courage, and a shoulder to lean on. We bring ourselves, our talents, and our passion to our schools, community colleges, county offices of education, and the public. Our work is more important now than ever to keep our students learning and work towards a kinder future.
We are everyday superheroes to our students. We build connections and inspire lives in our communities. We get it done.
There is no pandemic, billionaire, or politician that will stop us from improving the lives of our members, students, and community. |
