The San Francisco-Bay Area Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives has announced its My Voice Matters 2021 cash winnings essay contest for young people up to ages 12 - 25. The deadline to enter is Friday, October 1st, prizes range from $200 to $50, and the essay needs to be at least 500 words. Fifty to $200 for a page of writing is a pretty amazing deal! Negotiating the Educational System: Parent workshop Part. 2 With Dr. Mary Bacon
Join us Tuesday, October 19, 2021, via zoom at 6:00 pm. for the second workshop in this parent/guardian engagement workshop, Negotiating the Educational System.
The bureaucracy of the school system can be quite confusing to families, particularly those whose children may be experiencing academic, behavioral or social challenges in adjusting to the requirements of the school environment. Schools have a variety of conferences involving parents and school staff for reasons ranging from the routine discussion of student’s academic progress to meetings regarding various aspects of student school achievement or adjustment that need to be addressed. They may be the formal parent-teacher conferences scheduled district-wide after several months of school or informal meetings regarding various aspects of a student’s school adjustment, initiated either by the school or the family. This presentation will focus on providing information about the typical school meetings that routinely take place in schools and will provide concrete strategies and family-friendly handouts that can provide participants with the information and tools needed to be better equipped to advocate for their children in school meetings as equal status partners with educators.

2nd Annual HBCU Virtual Experience
The Prince George's County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc 2nd HBCU Virtual Experience is scheduled for November 6, 2021. This is an opportunity for students, parents, and educators to learn about 20+ HBCUs from Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Florida, and more. Topics include admissions, scholarships, academic programs and more. Some HBCUs are waiving application fees, offering admissions, and offering scholarships to qualified high school seniors. There will also be a panel discussion with current HBCU students. This event is free and open to the public.

NAACP hosted COVID-19 Vaccine and Flu Shot Clinic
The El Cerrito NAACP Branch invites you to a free health community event Saturday, October 9, 2021 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm at St. Peter C.M.E. Church parking lot, 5324 Cypress Avenue, El Cerrito, 94530. Children and youth ages 12-17 years old will need a parent/guardian present and a consent form signed. Black Parents Resource Center
The Of fice of African American Student Achievement is proud to announce a new community based organization The Black Parents Resource Center (TBPRC). TBPRC will be working with the West Contra Costa Unified School District Community. TBPRC was founded by two Black parents, Zelon Harrison and Juanita Towns, who have students in the WCCUSD. The organization is now partnering with our school district to help strengthen support for Black families.
The Black Parents Resource Center is a community grass-roots organization working to improve the educational, economic empowerment, housing, health and social and political justice for Black parents and caregivers that have students attending school in the WCCUSD.
TBPRC’s goal is to create a better future for Black marginalized communities by improving access to resources and services for parents, caregivers and students who self-identify as being descendent of Africans enslaved in the United States. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, TBPRC is utilizing virtual services and pop-up locations. In-person appointments are available if necessary. Please contact us for more details.
