Empower Your Daughter During Spring Break!

The Brown Girls Empowerment Virtual Spring Break Camp, facilitated by WCCUSD alumna, Dr. Carmen McNeil, provides a supportive and stimulating environment for girls, ages 10 to 14, of all beautiful shades of brown to identify their gifts via an exploration of the African American experience. We’ll integrate culturally reflective mindfulness, art projects, kid-friendly music, and choreographed dance with the intention of supporting girls in being confident and self-loving.  We’re looking forward to partnering with you in helping to uplift your brilliant, blossoming, brown girl!  Have questions?  Contact us at info@drcarmenmcneil.com or 925-385-8832.  Camp size enrollment is limited to ensure high-quality interaction so register today at bit.ly/browngirlscamp.

Selina Jackson Hosts Workshop for Parents

Selina Johnson, a 25+ year educator and counselor, will host a virtual workshop for families on April 17 at 10 a.m. via Zoom.

Selina will offer tips on how to effectively support students with restlessness and anxiety. Here's what Johnson has to say about the upcoming workshop:

Because of the present situation, many parents and students are having emotional and behavioral problems such as: siblings not getting along, kids not doing their homework, kids feeling fearful, upset, restless and anxious about the situation. And this causes parents themselves to feel anxious, frustrated, overwhelmed, and fearful.

SOLUTION WORKSHOP - “Urgent Help for Restless and Anxious Students at Home”

In this program, I will provide online interactive classes and live streaming where you will discover how to more deeply understand your child so that you (and your child) can be happier.

Additionally, you will discover PROVEN strategies for:

  • Mastering Emotions: Helping your child discover how to manage their emotions more effectively and build resilience that will last way after any crises
  • Motivating your children easier and more effectively
  • Diffusing Hotheads
  • Effective Communication: How to get your child to complete homework with four easy questions (without the hassle)
  • Learning Styles – Understanding how you and your child learns best
  • Easier and more effective conflict management (between siblings and between parent and child)

As a result of using this program, YOU AND YOUR CHILD WILL:

  • Feel less anxious and less insecure
  • Feel less out of control of the results you want
  • And you would be making a significant contribution to the wellbeing of yourself and your children

Could You be an Auditory Learner?

We continue with our series on learning styles by sharing some of the traits of an auditory learner and some practical tips to support the acquisition of new information.  Are you or your child an auditory learner?

You are an auditory learner, if you learn by hearing and listening. You understand and remember things you have heard. You store information by the way it sounds, and you have an easier time understanding spoken instructions than written ones. You often learn by reading out loud because you have to hear it or speak it in order to know it.

As an auditory learner, you probably hum or talk to yourself or others if you become bored. People may think you are not paying attention, even though you may be hearing and understanding everything being said.

Here are some things that auditory learners like you can do to learn better.

  • Sit where you can hear.

  • Have your hearing checked on a regular basis.

  • Use flashcards to learn new words; read them out loud.

  • Read stories, assignments, or directions out loud.

  • Record yourself spelling words and then listen to the recording.

  • Have test questions read to you out loud.

  • Study new material by reading it out loud.

Remember that you need to hear things, not just see things, in order to learn well.
