Friday, April 2 Superintendent Update: Spring Recess, Planning and Preparing for Intervention and Instruction; Students Making News
April 2, 2021
Happy Friday, WCCUSD community:
It is the eve of the spring recess, and we are less than nine weeks away from the end of the school year. This year has been a year like no other. Teachers and families have adjusted to the new environment and built and cultivated relationships through Zoom sessions, office hour screens, virtual read-alouds and storytimes, and cooking lessons.
But after more than 13 months of virtual connections, there is light. Covid-19 case rates and spread continue to decline in Contra Costa County. This week, Contra Costa County Health Services opened the Covid-19 vaccine to anyone 16-years or older living or working in the county.
When we return from break on April 12, we will have a clearer picture of the number of staff volunteering for the return to campus plan and the number of students we will be able to offer in-person intervention and instruction.
Finally, I want to enter the break with great news—first, congratulations to former student school board trustee and Richmond High School senior Stephanie Garcia-Avila. Stephanie is bound for the Pacific Northwest after finding out this week about being accepted to Gonzaga University. Congratulations, Stephanie.
Also, check out Middle College High School senior Naja Ji Jaga’s story on KPIX 5’s Students Rising Above segment. Naja’s story aired during the noon newscast today and repeated at 5 p.m. It airs again on Sunday at 6 a.m. Congratulations, Naja, who is also off to Boston University.
A special thank you to the Youth Solidarity Project for planning Saturday’s March in Solidarity with the AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) Community. The march starts at 2 p.m. at El Cerrito High School and concludes at El Cerrito City Hall.
If you have news about where your senior is going to school next year, let us know by emailing the communications department at communications@wccusd.net.
While we are on break, please follow the public health guidelines, wear a mask, practice social distancing, and wash your hands.
Thank you again. Enjoy the break.
In community,
Matthew Duffy
