December 11 Friday Update: Multipurpose Family Income Form Deadline
December 11, 2020
Happy Friday, WCCUSD Community,
Melynda Piezas loves her team at Dover Elementary School. As the Panther’s principal, she and her team have creatively celebrated the school’s diversity, encouraged civic engagement, and promoted literacy, all in a virtual environment.
Dover had to change and adapt everything they do due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including outreach to families. The team has utilized the two-way communication app Class DoJo, created YouTube videos, and had staff conduct socially-distanced home visits (done before the most recent stay-at-home orders) to reach its community.
But Piezas and her team and the rest of the WCCUSD family could use your help. We need every family to complete the Multipurpose Family Income Forms (English | Spanish). Before the pandemic, we relied on in-person contact to connect with families, including assistance with the Multipurpose Family Income Forms. As a district, we are down 3% from where we were last year, resulting in a loss of about $5 million in state funding.
A loss of a resource in that amount means that schools will feel the impact.
Dover’s team uses the funding to purchase books, software programs, fund field trips, materials and supplies, and services that directly impact students.
We can control this by completing the form and sharing the news about the forms’ importance with WCCUSD’s community. Like we did here with Richmond’s team.
We need everyone, REGARDLESS of income, to complete the form. Even if you don’t qualify, we still need you to check a box that says, “I do not qualify.”
WCCUSD received a boost this week from the state as it altered its rule around the form and will allow us to collect, verify, and submit it over the phone. The District’s school community outreach workers, office managers, and attendance clerks began reaching out again this week to families that have not completed the form.
We need families to contact their schools and ensure we have your best contact information (email, text, or phone) and expect a call from us about the forms. If you have completed the forms, please share the news and encourage other families in your network to complete the forms.
Our goal is to have all families complete the form, and we have until December 31 to get them in.
“The Dover team is trying everything,” Piezas said about her team, including Edgar Medina, Community Schools Beacon Director, Anabel Barron, School Community Outreach Worker, America Pizano, School Secretary, and Ana Lepez, Attendance Clerk. “We have a great team that is interested in helping the community the best way we can.”
Lastly, we have one week before break, and we need everyone to take care of themselves both from COVID-19 and from the effects of the pandemic. Follow all the public health guidelines, including at least 6-feet of space and wearing a mask when out. The positivity rate and cases are up in almost every one of our neighborhoods.
If you feel the pandemic’s effects on your physical or emotional health, please seek and or ask for help. The district has resources, people, and partners that can help. I urge you to contact a teacher, principal, school staff, district staff, community engagement, communications, or myself if you need assistance. We are all experiencing this pandemic in different ways, but we can and must stick together. Enjoy the weekend, and please take care of yourself and your family and friends (social/physically distant, of course).
In community,
Matthew Duffy
Superintendent
