WCCUSD RECEIVES $30 MILLION FROM STATE TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY SCHOOLS
Award is for $29.45 Million from CA Community Schools Partnership Program Grant
RICHMOND—West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) is excited to announce that the California Department of Education has awarded the district with a CA Community Schools Partnership Program (CCSPP) Implementation Grant at $29.450 million over the next five years.
The grant must be approved by the State Board of Education at its May 18, 2022 meeting.
The CCSPP grant will allow WCCUSD to provide a set of universal supports to 22 community schools, focusing on the integration of positive school climate, community engagement, and instruction work:
- Each participating community school will be resourced with a Community Schools Director, a School and Community Outreach Worker, and funding to support increased expanded learning programing.
- Each participating community school will be supported by a Central Office Community Schools Manager, Restorative Justice/PBIS Manager, Early Intervention Specialist and Outreach Specialist.
- Discretionary site funding to allocate towards resources such as mental health clinicians and tutoring.
“This is an unprecedented opportunity for our district to catalyze and accelerate the development of the next generation of our community schools,” said WCCUSD Superintendent Dr. Chris Hurst. “We are working together towards a day when all students are well-known, well-cared for, and well-prepared in all of the communities we serve.”
WCCUSD has a rich tradition of community schools organizing. WCCUSD began its community schools strategy in 2007 with the establishment of school-based health centers at six comprehensive high schools. In 2012, the district adopted a Full Service Community Schools Resolution. Today, 22 schools participate in the district’s community schools network, offering a wide range of critical services to students, parents, educators, staff, and communities, while building the frameworks for whole school and whole district transformation. This funding will allow the district to expand this work and bring it to additional sites.
