5/26/22 Safety Message from Dr. Hurst
Dear WCCUSD Community:
This morning, students and staff at one of our schools, Grant Elementary in Richmond, had to briefly shelter-in-place because gunshots were fired in the area. Everyone is safe: no students, staff or families were harmed and the school was not targeted. We have been in contact with the Richmond Police Department about the incident.
We know emotions are high and nerves are frayed after the school shooting in Texas this week, and I wanted to let you know about this incident right away. We are focused on safety, and we will continue to do everything in our power to ensure our school campuses are safe. We have spoken to the police departments in each city in our district and they informed us that they are increasing the number of patrols for each of our school campuses.
Safety is a key area of focus for us: we have worked on site-specific safety plans and held recent community forums to hear feedback and ideas from the community.
For the remainder of the school year, we are reinforcing operations plans with principals ensuring all sites have a single point of entry. Additional district safety personnel are also being made available to sites on an as needed basis, and we are dispatching district personnel to sites as well.
Respectfully,
Dr. Kenneth Chris Hurst
Superintendent
