West County School Board Continues Investment in Student Achievement
West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) Board of Education on Wednesday night approved a $310 million budget for the 2015-16 school year that increases its investment in college and career readiness, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) opportunities, full-day kindergarten at its highest need schools, and a technology replacement plan.
The adopted budget allows the District to expand the priorities listed in the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), which was also approved by the board on Wednesday night.
“The actions and services outlined in our Local Control Accountability Plan reflect the priorities of our stakeholders,” Board President Todd Groves said. “Now that we have more resources, our budgets can better reflect this Board’s intense focus on improving academic outcomes for all of our students.”
The budget continues efforts begun in previous years including K-3 class size reduction, adding counseling staff, programs and services to the District’s college readiness and Linked Learning programs, expanding STEM opportunities by funding the Fab Lab at Kennedy High School, and implementing full-day kindergarten at 20 schools, nine more than in the 2014-15 school year.
The budget includes $240.5 million in state funding through the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) and $62 million in special grant funding from sources such as the local parcel tax that voters approved to fund counselors, librarians and athletic programs at District schools.
