Food Services Nutrition Festival Celebrates 25th Anniversary at Montalvin
The District’s Food Services Department held its 25th Annual Nutrition, Health, and Fitness festival Thursday at Montalvin Elementary School to educate students about the benefits of implementing healthy food choices and activities in their routine.
Students participated in a full day of activities that included fruit and vegetable tasting, dancing and games, and fitness stations across the campus. Students also learned about gardening and planted sunflowers in honor of Earth Day.
“The festival is a way of getting schools excited about nutrition,” Food Services Director Barbara Jellison said. “Montalvin is a school that has always promoted nutrition, and they have taken advantage of all of the programs that the USDA offers schools in the District.”
Each year, Food Services selects a school to host the festival, which continues to draw support from local community members and officials, such as former Congressman George Miller, representatives from Contra Costa County Supervisor John Gioia’s office, and San Pablo Vice Mayor Paul Morris.
Heidy Camororngan, retired Food Services Director, said she started the festival for students to celebrate the end of the school year and expose them to a variety of nutrition options.
“We started at Coronado Elementary School the first year to uplift the students,” Camororngan said. “The festival continues to be a success because staff are so dedicated and willing to do the hard work to please and inspire the students, and keep them interested in nutrition.”
The festival also serves to promote the Districts summer meal program that will kick off in June.
