Richmond High Debaters Have Early Success
The nascent Richmond High School debate team tasted competitive success for the first time in its short history earlier this month. The squad won first and second place in the rookie division for beginners and three students won speaker awards in the Top 10 at the Bay Area Urban Debate League’s New Year’s Classic tournament at UC Berkeley.
Aswun James and Louissa Flenaugh took home the first place trophy while
Brandi House and Pearlina Nguyen placed second. Louissa was named the fourth
best speaker of the tournament while Pearlina and Aswun placed fifth and sixth.
Ronvel Sharper and Cristal Molina placed 12th and Ronvel was
the 15th best speaker on the day.
The team is
coached by Haiyen Truong with support from BAUDL coordinator Darrell Kinney and
mentor Tom Trieu.
The team next competes at the March madness tournament at Castlemont High School in Oakland on March 18.
