January 8 Friday Update: Welcome back, Return to School Survey Deadline Extended, COVID-19 and Schools Study Session
January 8, 2020
Welcome back and Happy New Year, WCCUSD community,
It has been a busy week back, and it was a difficult day for our country and democracy on Wednesday with the events that occurred at our Nation’s Capitol. The transfer of power has always been peaceful in our country. Many students may have questions about the events, and we have encouraged WCCUSD leaders to provide safe spaces for students to ask questions and create dialogue. Thank you to all of our teachers and leaders who helped with additional resources and time to process these events with students. Hopefully, we will come together as a nation and heal in the new year.
In case you missed it, here is the welcome back video we sent Thursday. We have extended the deadline to 8 pm next Friday, Jan. 15, for the Return to School Survey. Thank you to the more than 5,000 families that completed the survey.
The survey followed California Assemblymember Phil Ting’s legislation AB10 to reopen schools. Last week, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced additional funding for Districts to assist in returning to in-person instruction for grades TK-2 and then 3rd grade through 6th. At the same time, we are also experiencing the most COVID cases reported in California, with over 70,000 reported on Monday, Jan. 4.
We need every family to complete the survey to help plan for a return to in-person instruction when it is safe to do so. In addition to the survey, we are hosting a Board Study Session around COVID-19 and schools on Wednesday, Jan. 20, via Zoom.
Thank you to the Board and President Mister Phillips for organizing the study session that will feature several educational presentations to help the community understand all of the facts about COVID-19 by Contra Costa Health Services’ Officer Chris Farnitano, UCSF professor of Epidemiology, Preventive Medicine, Pediatrics and History and head of Division of Infectious Disease and Global Epidemiology George Rutherford, III, MD, Benjamin W. Cottingham, associate director of strategic partnerships at Policy Analysis for California Education (PACE), and a forensic facility review. Again, the session will be held virtually via Zoom, and the survey will be discussed at the study session.
There are a few other important announcements that I wanted to bring to your attention. We have postponed the scheduled virtual Back-to-School events for January 18, 19, and 20 to a later date. We had previously scheduled those as a way to connect, hoping to return to in-person learning. When we can return, we will ensure dedicated time with schools and families to welcome our students back.
January 14 also marks the end of the second quarter. Friday, January 15, is a non-school day for secondary students as it is a secondary teacher workday for grading the first semester and planning the second. Monday, January 18, is a school holiday in honor of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Finally, thank you, families, for completing the Multipurpose Family Income Form or letting us know you did not qualify. We surpassed the number of forms completed from a year ago. Thank you also to the School Community Outreach Workers, Community Engagement, and principal and school teams for connecting with families and getting the forms completed.
Enjoy the weekend, and continue to follow all public health guidelines and protocols.
In community,
Matthew Duffy
Superintendent
