Unexpected Letter in Food Boxes Distributed at Meal Locations
Good evening WCCUSD Community,
We were notified this week that the food boxes distributed with WCCUSD meals at two distribution locations unexpectedly included a letter being distributed nationwide from President Donald Trump. The letter has been criticized because its arrival is just weeks before the November 3 election.
We want you to know that politics should not be associated with the food boxes. The boxes are being distributed as part of the CARES act. The CARES act was signed by the president and had the support of all our local representatives including Congressman Mark DeSaulnier, Congressman Mike Thompson, U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein and U.S. Senator and Vice Presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
WCCUSD’s Food Services’ partner, Daylight Foods, was awarded a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and partnered with us to distribute the food boxes during the pandemic. We will continue to distribute these food boxes with the generous help from Daylight Foods to help supplement the meals we provide for students during distance learning. It is possible future boxes will contain the same or a similar letter from the president.
WCCUSD is a sanctuary district, located in several sanctuary cities and inside a sanctuary state, which means we support ALL of our students, families and staff no matter where they are from or how they arrived here.
We provide food every Tuesday and Thursday at 9 school locations across the District, and will do so with or without a message from the government. The food boxes are distributed at two locations: Nutrition Services Center, 750 Bissell Ave, in Richmond on Wednesdays and rotated every Thursday at the nine school locations.
