August 17 Return to School Update: Back to School Night Postponed
August 17, 2020
Dear WCCUSD Families,
Thank you for a great first day of school! We saw so many pictures and videos of students, families, teachers and school staff engaged and building relationships in an environment that is new to all of us.
As expected, the beginning of this school year has been unpredictable. The intermittent power outages affecting communities throughout the district has caused some challenges. Due to the rolling power outages planned for this week and the potential for many families and teachers to not have full power, we are postponing the scheduled Back to School Night events.
The new dates will be:
- Monday, August 24 - Elementary Schools
- Tuesday, August 25 - Middle Schools
- Thursday, August 27 - High Schools
This delay will ensure that we have all students registered and connected to their teachers before Back to School Night. Your child’s school will contact you with more details.
If there is a short-term power outage, the current plan is that instruction will continue with students being assigned independent work offline. Schools will remain open to offer support and provide meals (at designated locations). The Distance Learning model allows teachers to shift students to independent work (not online) for the period of the outage. Unless we learn of multi-day power shut downs, our educational program will continue.
There are scenarios in which a student may have a power outage that does not impact the entire class. Similarly, teachers could lose power at their home or in their classroom, but students are not affected. In the event of a teacher experiencing an outage, a message will be posted by the teacher on the classroom’s Learning Management System (Google Classroom, Seesaw) to shift instruction to independent work for that day.
If the teacher is offline, they will coordinate with school leadership to inform students and families about the change. If a student cannot connect to the Internet due to an outage, the teacher will allow them to shift the due date of their assignments to a time when power is restored.
In addition, for students that still need immunizations we are asking that they begin attending distance learning classes now while they work to get all required immunizations completed.
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to navigate a challenging and ever changing situation.
