Superintendent Message -- April 2020

Dear Community,

We have had quite an interesting six weeks. The COVID-19 crisis has altered what we knew as normal. Families’ lives have been affected in ways few of us could have imagined. Loved ones have been lost, jobs have been affected and how we knew education has changed. Yet despite the current conditions, the spirit and character of this community has carried us through to a point where we will come out stronger.

Volunteers have shown up since the closure to distribute and prepare meals for students. Teachers, counselors, principals have jumped in to make sure students and families are OK. Community groups have rallied to fill gaps in our community. So thank you for sticking with us as we figure out and navigate the COVID-19 crisis together. It is a pleasure to be a part of the WCCUSD community that has rallied around and taken care of one another.

I want to take a minute to talk to one particular group of the WCCUSD community, the seniors in the Class of 2020. This year has not gone anywhere near what a “normal” senior year is supposed to look like. Seniors-You worked extremely hard to get to this point and you should be focused on senior trips, finals, yearbooks, relationships you've nourished for four years, graduation, and your next steps whether that is college, career or service. Instead, we are figuring out how to continue to learn while sheltering in place without daily physical contact with friends, colleagues, teachers, principals and school staff.  I am so sorry that this happened. This is not how your senior year was supposed to end. Please know that we are working to figure out some of those details. What will graduation look like? Could it be a virtual ceremony or a November or December celebration during either the Thanksgiving or Winter Holiday break? 

What about proms and senior trips? Can we put together a memorable virtual experience with guest DJs and speakers?

Those are important questions that still need answers.

Here is what we do know. This final quarter will be pass-credit. Students who do work that is C- or better will receive a Pass, while all other students will receive Credit. This ensures that students who receive a Pass can have their coursework accepted by colleges and universities. The Credit designation allows students to count the class towards graduation.

Students will not be penalized if they are unable to access the material. However, we are making every stride to ensure that students are able to access distance learning through chromebooks, wifi hotspots and other internet access options. The UC and CSU systems have altered their admissions to help accommodate the Class of 2020 during this crisis. You can find other Class of 2020 resources on the District’s website at

Related to grading, we also launched Distance Learning Phase 2 on April 13 that included a more structured learning plan. Examples for Preschool, TK-1st, 2nd-6th and Middle to High school can be seen here at We are also hosting a family/parent Distance Learning Workshop on Wednesday via Zoom at 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. in English and from 2:30 p.m. to 3:45 in Spanish. Thank you to the District’s educational services and information technology teams, teachers, principals, and parent and family leaders, who worked together to create the guides. We continue to figure out what we may be able to offer this summer for our students both digitally and possibly in person.  And of course, we are working on plans A, B, and C for the opening of school in the fall if we can open the schools at all. 

The COVID-19 crisis has altered what was normal, but we will come out stronger. We don’t know what the future looks like. What we do know is that we will continue to work for and with WCCUSD students and families to ensure they are receiving an empowering, engaging, and challenging education experience.
