March 18 Community Update: Reminder schools to open for three hours for Chromebook and charger pick up
March 18, 2020
Dear WCCUSD Families,
It’s Day 3 of our school closures due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak affecting our community. I hope that you and your families are successfully handling this situation. As you know, there is a stream of new, and often surprising, information every day. Last night, Governor Gavin Newsom said that schools may not open before the traditional summer break. This pronouncement was unexpected to say the least. Please know the governor was not making any definite statements about school this year, but was rather raising the possibility that schools could be closed for an indefinite period of time.
Whatever happens, we will continue our planning in case an extended closure is necessary. We are working with the California Department of Education and our colleagues in other school districts on how to best prepare if our schools are unable to reopen by April 13, as currently expected. We will continue to communicate with you regularly and keep you informed about any changes.
As a reminder from yesterday’s message, we are planning to open all schools for a three-hour window from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. This is an opportunity for students and families to pick up distance learning materials such as Chromebooks with chargers and work packets/workbooks/books. Unfortunately, the district is out of wifi hotspots at this time. We are working to secure additional hotspots, so please fill out this hotspot waiting list form (https://forms.gle/4A48ryw8PtHU8rvT8). For alternate ways to access wifi, please visit the District’s e-Learning page.
The only items that will be distributed are Chromebooks and prepared packets. We want to stress that this is not an opportunity to socialize or to come to school to pick up lost or forgotten items. If you come to school tomorrow evening, please follow social distancing guidelines. This means that you should not attend if you are sick or have any flu-like symptoms and remain six feet away from other people. As we learn more about the county’s health order, we will work to provide additional opportunities to get resources from your child’s school.
If there are any District families who are not receiving messages from the District, please share this link (https://forms.gle/sNUBxuu7gAGbtWRm6) so they can make sure we have their updated information. Also check the District’s closure page www.wccusd.net/districtclosure often as we post updates and resources there as we receive them.
Thank you for your continued patience and support.
