Community Update: Student meals available at nine schools from 11 am-1 pm, starting Monday, March 16

Dear WCCUSD Community,
I want to thank you for being patient as we worked through the best way to manage the coronavirus situation. The news we receive changes frequently and forces us to make quick decisions that impact our students, families and employees.
We are still receiving new information, which has changed how we will handle school closures. I ask that you continue to be patient as we work through these new conditions and try to provide empowering, engaging and challenging educational experiences while ensuring equity and access for all students.
First, we have expanded the meal distribution to the original nine schools. Meals can be picked up from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the following locations:
- De Anza
- Pinole Valley
Like the summer meal program, all children under 18, regardless of free or reduced priced meal status or the school they attend, are eligible. The details may change, but we will strive to provide as many meal distribution locations as possible. Families can either drive or walk up to receive meals, but will not be able to eat on either campus.
Second, we encourage families to continue learning to the ability that they can at home. Many of our teachers have posted lessons online and prepared packets for students. Because we cannot ensure access to every student in our district, we will not mandate the distance learning as a required instructional program for the next two weeks. This means students will not be graded or penalized if they do not complete this work. However, we strongly believe that completing these assignments and keeping a strong connection to instruction is important during the closures.
Teachers will be working to provide as much material as they can for students. Some individual teachers may have difficulty maintaining the distance learning because of family concerns due to the current coronavirus situation, so we will work to create a central system where lessons and resources can be accessed equitably by all students. We will share information about this central resource and lesson location as soon as we can.
Families that need help with the student Chromebooks can call our Tech Support Hotline at (510) 243-3901 or send an email to email@example.com. At this time, we have distributed all of our hotspots and have no more available. We are working to acquire more and will keep you updated. Another option is Comcast Internet Essentials. They are offering two months of free internet to new customers at https://www.internetessentials.com/.
We are expecting further guidance from the state and governor later this week, possibly as soon as Tuesday, on distance learning and student meals.
We are hoping to be able to open our schools briefly at some point this week for any student who still needs technology or for staff who have left essential items. As of today, we have not devised this plan and will update you as we move forward.
