De Anza, Kennedy High School Football Teams Two Wins From First NCS Titles in More Than 30 Years
The last time the De Anza and Kennedy high school football teams were both in this position, none of the current players were born and most of their parents were still in grade school.
But for the first time in 30 years, the Dons and Eagles are one step closer to a North Coast Section title after breezing through their first round games.
Kennedy (10-1) entered the first week of the North Coast Section playoffs as the top seed in Division VI and beat No. 8 Arcata 35-6 on Nov. 15. De Anza (10-1) is the fourth seed in Division V and won 41-21 over visiting San Marin.
Both teams continue their NCS championship dreams with semifinal games on Friday .
The Eagles (10-1) are seeking their first NCS title since beating Healdsburg 14-6 in the 1988 Division 2A title game. Kennedy is two games away from reclaiming the title. Kennedy hosts No. 4 Justin Siena-Napa at 7 p.m. Justin Siena beat Lower Lake 55-14 to advance.
The Dons won their first and only NCS title the year before Kennedy in 1987 when they beat Marin Catholic 21-12, also in the Division 2A title game. De Anza is also two games away from another title. De Anza travels to face top-seeded Encinal-Alameda at 7 p.m. Encinal advanced to the semifinals with a 35-24 win over No. 8 Fortuna on Nov. 15.
