For the second straight year, students from the West Contra Costa Unified School District took over the airwaves, specifically KQED’s.
El Cerrito and Richmond high school students were featured prominently during KQED’s second annual Youth Takeover from April 29 through May 3. The Oilers and the Gauchos were among 10 Bay Area High Schools that took over KQED for the Youth Takeover. Both schools produced pieces ranging from gender identity to growing up Filipina in the Bay Area to sleep paralysis.
And for the second straight year, a WCCUSD student was selected to co-host the California Report Magazine with Sasha Khokha. This year, El Cerrito’s Autumn Sivadd co-hosted the show, which was recorded on-site at the District and school's radio station 88.1 keCG 97.7. The report also featured a segment called My Natural Hair Journey produced by Autumn. Last year, Richmond grad Tyrius Ammons hosted with Khokha.
Students in the media academies at Richmond and El Cerrito spent weeks honing their stories for the Takeover with seven selected to air on KQED during the week.
