Vista has been my school home for fourteen years. Teaching at Vista High School (VHS) is a real balancing act between planning lessons, teaching classes, and meeting with individual students.
I came to VHS after teaching math at Portola Middle School (Korematsu) and Pinole Middle School for a combined total of fifteen years. To support our students in meeting A-G requirements, we offer additional support in math. I teach middle school math, algebra, and geometry. Classes usually meet twice a week. When not teaching classes, I am meeting with students one-on-one. We have a part-time teacher that teaches Algebra 2 and pre-calculus.
During class we try to cover a section or two from the textbook. The tough part is the limited time there is to cover the material the student needs to complete their weekly assignments. Students may get additional math support by attending our Homework Help lab that is held every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:00pm-1:00pm.
As in any teaching job, the paperwork is immense and never-ending. Teachers, as well as students at VHS, must be organized, excellent time-managers, able to meet deadlines, follow directions, and keep commitments. The reward is seeing the students prosper, mature, and graduate.
