Special Olympics

On March 28, 2024, WCCUSD’s Shannon Elementary School planning committee, Principal Jennifer Gulick, office manager Ashely Ross, Adapted PE specialist and Department Lead, Shani Compton, Prince Smalls, Adapted PE Prep teacher and ESN teacher 4-6 teacher Cinthia Varela Valdes in conjunction with Special Olympics Northern California School partnership program held the 3rd annual Special Olympics Unified Basketball event.

The entire Shannon elementary school participated. For the first time, classes from other school sites attended including three ESN 4-6 grade classes from the following 3 schools: Riverside Elementary, King Elementary and Fairmont Elementary.

Students participated in basketball skills stations and unified basketball games. Promoting inclusion is among the top priorities for WCCUSD and events like this not only benefit students with disabilities, but truly generate positive outcomes for the overall general ed population on school campuses. A great time was had by all the participants.
