Charter Schools
Maintain high standards for charter approval & oversight;  balance autonomy with accountability,  and uphold student & public interests.

At West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD), we are committed to providing transparency and keeping our community informed about the educational options available within our district boundaries, including charter schools. While WCCUSD is not directly involved in the management of charter schools, we play a significant role in the charter school authorization, renewal, and petition process. We also provide public notice and share general information about charter schools located in the West Contra Costa area.

Why We Report About Charter Schools

WCCUSD is required to provide important information to the public about the charter schools within our geographic area for several reasons:

  1. Public Transparency: Even though WCCUSD is not the authorizing district for these charter schools, we must inform the public about the educational options available within the district’s physical boundaries.

  2. Charter School Authorization and Renewal: WCCUSD is actively involved in the charter school authorization, renewal, and petition processes, which includes reviewing applications for new charter schools or the renewal of existing ones. As part of this process, we must hold public hearings and provide opportunities for input from the community.

  3. Public Notice Requirements: In accordance with state education laws, we are obligated to provide public notice of any charter school petitions, approvals, or renewals within our area. This ensures the community is aware of the decisions and actions related to charter schools operating nearby.

  4. General Information: We provide general information about the charter schools located in our area, so parents and families are informed of all educational options available to them. This includes basic details about the charter schools' programs, enrollment procedures, and contact information.

While WCCUSD is not responsible for directly overseeing these charter schools, we are dedicated to ensuring the community has access to the necessary information regarding all educational opportunities in the area.

For more information about a specific charter school, please contact the school directly, or refer to their website for details about enrollment, programs, and governance. If you have questions about charter school authorizations or the petition process, please contact the department email listed above.
