California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP)

Overview

 

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System was established on January 1, 2014. The CAASPP System replaces the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program, which became inoperative on July 1, 2013.

 The primary purpose of the CAASPP system is to assist teachers, administrators, and pupils and their parents by promoting high-quality teaching and learning through the use of a variety of assessment approaches and item types.

 The federal No Child Left Behind Act requires all states to test all students in reading and mathematics in grades 3 through 8 and once in high school. Student performance on these assessments is reported in proficiency categories and used to determine accountability at the state, district, and school levels. 

 

 The CAASPP System includes the following required assessments and additional resources:

 

• Smarter Balanced Assessment System
  • Administered in grades 3-8, 11
  • Students exempted from participating in the SBAC are:
    • Students who participate in the Alternate assessments
    • ELA only – English learners who are in their first 12 months of attending a school in the Unites States
• California Science Test
  • Administered in grades 5,8, 11-*12
• California Alternate Assessments for English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics
  • Administered to students in grades 3-8, and 11 with the most significant cognitive disabilities and whose IEP states they take the alternate assessment.for ELA and Math
• California Alternate Assessment for Science
  • Administered to students in grades 5,8, 11-*12 with the most significant cognitive disabilities and whose IEP states they take the alternate assessment for science

         *Students in grade 12 will test if did not test in grade 11.
