El Cerrito High School and the Community
This semi-urban school of 1,612 students in grades 9-12 is located in San Francisco’s East Bay just north of Berkeley. One of six comprehensive high schools in the West Contra Costa Unified School District, El Cerrito High School draws students from the communities of El Cerrito, Richmond, and Kensington. The 2019 graduating class is over 90%.
Our student body is diverse, including 17% African American, 31% Caucasian, 22% Asian American and Pacific Islander, and 28% of Hispanic origins. Approximately 195 students are Limited English Proficient, 116 are in Resource Specialist programs, and 43% of our students qualify for the Free/Reduced Lunch program. Approximately 77 students are severely or non-severely handicapped. The student-to-counselor ratio is 550:1.
Block Schedule: Until the 1997-98 school year ECHS followed a traditional high school schedule. In September 1997, a Block Schedule program began. The usual student program under this schedule is seven courses per year. As in previous years, each course (most of which now last 18 weeks) earns a total of 10 credits, with five credits earned each term. Students attend class five days per week. Instructional minutes are 100 minutes daily for most courses. Student transcripts therefore reflect three to four courses per term, earning five credits per 90-minute. Marks and credits are posted every nine weeks.
El Cerrito High offers a four-year college preparatory education. In addition, there are three Special Academies: Information Technology, Media, and Auto Technology (Green).
ECHS students participate in a full co-curricular program of 11 competitive sports (B=boys, G=girls): Football (B), Softball (G), Badminton (B), Basketball (B&G), Baseball (B) Volleyball (B&G), Tennis (B&G), Swimming (B&G), and Golf (B&G). There are over 45 clubs for students to develop skills and explore interests including Interact, Amnesty International, Queer Straight Alliance, African American, Asian American, and Latino Student Union, etc.
College and Career Prep Programs
ECHS has several collaborative programs with UC Berkeley's EAOP (Early Academic Outreach Program) & DCAC (Destination College Advising Corps) often collaborates with our site to strengthen the college-going culture and make college a viable option for all students. She advises students one-on-one, hosts workshops, conducts classroom presentations and organizes school-wide events. Other programs includes Upward Bound, Educational Talent Search, African American Male Pipeline, Rising Scholars and One Goal. In addition, college admission officers are invited to speak to our students about their school.
Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors Classes
AP classes offered this year include English Language and Composition, English Literature, World History (10th), U.S. History (11th), U.S. Government and Politics (12th), Calculus AB and BC, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, French Language, Japanese Language, Spanish Language, AP Computer Science, and AP Psychology. Last year, all student who took an AP course were automatically eligible to participate in AP exam.
We offer Honors classes in French Language 4, Spanish Language 4, Japanese Language 4, Pre-calculus and Physics.
In school year 2018-19, El Cerrito High juniors and seniors took the SAT.

Approximately 40% of ECHS graduates go directly to four-year colleges and another 50% to two-year colleges. We are a significant feeder source for UC Berkeley’s freshman classes and are among the top California schools preparing under-represented students for four-year colleges.

Course Credits and Curriculum
Students must earn a minimum of 225 course credits to graduate. Five credits are granted for courses that meet five days a week for the 18-week semester, with the following allocation of credits and their semester and year equivalents:

Marking System, Transcripts, Grade Point Average (GPA), and Class Rank
Students are graded on a scale of A-F: A, B and C are college recommending marks, D is passing with credit and F is failing.
Transcripts are electronically generated through the PowerSchool computer system using the common 0.00-4.0 numerical mark equivalents:

The transcript GPA includes credit earned in all courses, designating weighted GPA and un-weighted GPA. Weighted GPA includes an additional point for Honors (H), Advanced Placement (AP), and approved college level courses (P) with grades of C or better. The State GPA listed in the transcript excludes freshman grades and physical education grades Class rank includes all courses and is determined by the weight GPA for grade 10-12.
