LESSON 5: Live Performance!
OUTCOME:Using the lines that they have created, as well as any new material they wish to introduce, each team will produce and perform as many poems as there are members of the group. Each group may decide how they wish to perform the poems: recording them, orally with music, interpreting them with dance or acting, and so on. The students will know how to combine disparate words and phrases and will understand the power of linguistic surprise.
CONDITIONS: This lesson could take from two to three class periods (one to three hours). The teacher will be accessible at all times to assist in the task. The students should work in groups of three to four. The teacher might want to have some music tapes on hand for the students to use, as well as a tape recorder.
ACTIVITIES:

¨ Introduce the outcome and give a few examples, such as "The brown bat swims across the dusted skies". Encourage them to think of subjects first, possibly in nature, and then to brainstorm words that might go with the subject word. |
¨ Have fun with this exercise! This is a chance to be silly. The poem only needs to make sense to you. ¨ Decide how your group wants to perform the poems. Do you want to use music? Do you all want to read all of them in unison? |
MATERIALS: tape recorder, music tapes.
METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: General Rubric, Basic Skills, Acquisition of Information, and Application of Information.
MODIFICATIONS/ACCOMODATIONS: Include students with differing verbal abilities in the groups. Allow one person to read all of the group’s work, with no names attached. Allow for some people to pass on the performance part.
STANDARDS: Language Arts, Reading (1.1) ; Life Skills #48, #49, #85, #66, #64.
