OUTCOME: Students will learn how to work in groups as a way to expose and organize information. They will understand the value of speaking freely as it relates to obtaining large amounts of information. They will know what information fits and what may be discarded. They will know that group interaction produces more information than individual thought. They will develop and recognize number patterns. They will be judged on group work and math logic.
CONDITIONS: Given a sample of a number pattern, the class will work together to brainstorm more mathematical patterns.

¨ Teacher will explain the term "brainstorming": (ie, you just think quickly and speak what is on your mind. You do not need to raise your hand) ¨ Prepare some large sheets of butcher paper and place on a wall where students Can write Give them an example of a simple number pattern on the chalk board. ¨ Tell students to work independently to develop solutions to the patterns produced by groups other than the one in which they participated. |
¨ Have students work in teacher chosen groups to brainstorm. Let them brainstorm for a few minutes on any topic just to get them working together. ¨ Have them brainstorm to come up with more complicated number patterns. Have them draw their number patterns using colored markers on the butcher paper leaving enough space to continue the pattern. ¨ After all groups have put up their patterns, have individual students try to solve the pattern by putting in the next possible number that follows the pattern. When a student gets the correct pattern, have them put it, along with their name on the butcher paper. Then have them tell everyone the solution. |
MATERIALS: Butcher paper, 5 colors marking pens
METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Students may be assessed on the Life Skills Rubric for Cooperation, Initiative, Problem Solving, Teamwork.
MODIFICATIONS/ACCOMODATIONS: Place special ed students in groups with regular ed students, Allow extra time to brainstorm, Make examples clear and simple. Provide more examples. Allow picture or symbol patterns instead of numbers.
STANDARDS: Mathematics - Algebra: 1. Students identify and use the arithmetic properties of subsets of integers, rational, irrational and real numbers. This includes closure properties for the four basic arithmetic operations where applicable. Benchmark 1.1 Contra Costa Life Long Standards: Working with others (1) the student contributes to the overall effort of a group. Benchmark: Uses strategies to help the group establish and achieve goals.
