HEALTH-RELATED ILLNESSES/JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN THE HEALTH FIELD.

OVERVIEW OF PROJECT: The unit is based on health related illnesses common amongst teenager. It also focuses on the causes, effects and prevention. Students will become aware of the career opportunities in the health field. The lessons are one to two periods in length. They challenge students to think about the causes of health-related illnesses and how they can be prevented. Students will do research on health careers as well and also conduct interviews with health care workers who are working in areas of interest to them. Th unit builds on the health science framework used in the district.
OUTCOME: Each student will prepare a 1-3 page paper on health related illnesses. They will work in groups to discuss the causes, effects and prevention of the illness, which they will later present to the class. Students will do a research on health careers and conduct several interviews with health care workers. This experience will encourage them to focus more on science in order to achieve their goal of becoming a future health care work.
STANDARDS: Health Science Framework for California Public Schools.
ASSESSMENTS: Written discussion papers, Oral Presentations, Academic Rubric and Life Rubric
GOALS: To help students understand the causes of various illnesses and the methods of prevention. They will also be encouraged to focus on Academic subjects that will help them achieve their goal of becoming a health care worker.
MODIFICATIONS: Samples of interviews with health care workers, college brochures, videos of health careers.
CONDITIONS: A discussion on the type of questions to be asked during the interview will take place prior to getting in-groups of two. Each student will participate in contributing to the oral presentation.
MATERIALS: Chalkboard, Overhead projector, and Poster board, Visuals

HEALTH-RELATED ILLNESSES
LESSON 1: PULMONARY LUNG DISEASE (Emphasis on Asthma)

OUTCOME: Students will understand the purpose of the lesson and will be better informed about Asthma at the end of the course.
CONDITIONS: 2 class periods
TEACHER: Begin with a discussion of what actually causes illness. Especially Asthma (write down all answers given) examples include smoking or second hand smoke, inhaling toxic fumes, dust, pollen, strenuous exercise etc.
STUDENT: What can you do to prevent the onset of Asthma? Can anybody become asthmatic, is it contagious and who is at risk of becoming asthmatic?
TEACHER: Facilitates discussion on what can be done to prevent Asthma.
Shows a video on “Your child and Asthma”.
STUDENT: If you already have Asthma, how can you manage the illness and prevent the symptoms from getting worst?
EXTENSION: Students will do a case study of someone living with the illness or use themselves if they suffer from the illness.
MATERIALS: Flip charts showing normal lungs and unhealthy lungs with asthma, videos Your Child and Asthma, living with asthma, informative literature on asthma.
MODIFICATION/ACCOMODATION: Student will work in-groups of 2 on a project relating to different lung diseases. Guest speakers will be invited to do a lecture on various pulmonary illnesses.
METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: the teacher working in their groups using the life skills rubric and Academic rubric will observe Students.
HEALTH RELATED ILLNESSES
LESSON 2: DIABETES (Emphasis on Type 1 Diabetes)

OUTCOME: Students will understand the cause, effects and prevention of the disease as well as differences between type1 and type2 diabetes.
CONDITIONS: 2 class periods
TEACHER:
-Write the word “diabetes” on the board and ask students for the meaning (write down what they say on the chalkboard)
-What is type1 and type2 diabetes? Facilitate the discussion.
STUDENT:
-List the causes of diabetes.
OR
- What is/are cause(s) of diabetes in teenagers and adults?
TEACHER: Divide classes into small groups of 3-4 and asks students to brainstorm on the meaning of type1 and type2 diabetes and also discuss the differences and methods of prevention.
STUDENT: Groups will write out the differences between type1 and type2 diabetes and methods of prevention and ways of managing the illness.
MATERIALS: Literature on diabetes, poster paper for group discussion. Meal planning chart.
MODIFICATIONS/ACCOMODATION: Students will do a case study on someone living with either type1 or type2 diabetes. A guest speaker will also be invited. To do a class presentation on diabetes.
STANDARDS: Health science and related illnesses grade 8-12.
LESSON 3: JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN THE HEALTH FIELD

OUTCOME: Each student will be given a list of health careers and told to do a research on a career of interest to them. They will be encouraged to conduct an interview with someone in the health profession. This experience will help to expose and prepare them for the future.
CONDITIONS: This lesson will require 2 class periods.
TEACHER:
-Will write a list of health careers on the board. Examples are Doctor, Nurses, Radiologist, Respiratory therapist laboratory technician, Sonographers, medical assistant, etc.
-Pair up students to discuss at least 2 health careers.
STUDENTS:
-Choose 2 careers of interest and discuss the pre-requisites, academic subjects you need to focus on in middle and high school.
-Level of education needed in order to be eligible for the job.
-Salary and benefits for the job
MATERIALS: A brochure on health careers, college brochures on courses relating to health careers.
MODIFICATIONS/ACCOMMODATIONS:
Invite guest speakers to do a presentation on health careers. Students will interview health care workers who are working in areas of interest to them.
METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Academic rubric and life skills rubric. Acquisition of information and application of information.
STANDARDS: Careers in the health field. Grades 8-12.
