OUTCOME: Students will gain factual knowledge of the nature of industrial waste at on their school site. Students will gain process knowledge of the laboratory techniques and collection procedures for wastewater samples
CONDITIONS: Students will work in teams over a period of three class periods to complete location, collection and analysis of wastewater samples.

Day 1: v Teacher will form student teams and assign areas of the campus for investigation of wastewater collection sites. Day 2: v Teacher will describe techniques and universal precautions for the collection of samples. Day 3: v Teacher will model test for water available at the school site such as pH and dissolved oxygen |
v Students will methodically search for and locate collection sites using a map of the campus v Students will collect four sets of samples, two mid-morning and two mid-afternoon, from each collection site. v Students will practice laboratory tests as modeled by the teacher. Students will label and save sample for analysis at a wastewater treatment lab on a future date. |
MATERIALS:
1. Classroom Supplies
2. Plastic and Glass bottles
3. Rubber gloves
4. Any water testing instruments available at the school site.
METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Students will be assessed on language arts elements using the Access Academic Rubric and on the SCANS elements using the Access Life-skills Rubric
MODIFICATIONS/ACCOMODATIONS: Special needs students will be accommodated by
v the use of text reading and word prediction software.
v allowing students with limited writing skills to be paired with a more able peer to complete exercise.
v allowing students who receive a one or a two any major component of the project to edit and rewrite a second time.
v helping individual students directly to organize ideas and sentences.
