ACTIVITIES: Teacher and student procedure…
COMPOSTING STEPS:
1. Select an area on school grounds or at home to establish a compost pile. Preferably place it in the service area of the landscape.
2. Set up the wooden pallets (or any other wood or fence product) on edge and fasten them together with 14 gauge wire at the top and the bottom to construct a bin approx. 3’ high and 4’ wide.
3. Start the compost pile with available organic material i.e., leaves, grass clippings, food waste (no meat), straw, hay, shredded newspapers, and chopped tree trimmings. Start off with about a one- foot depth of material on the bottom.
4. Water the compost pile well and mix.
5. Add compost material as available.
6. Turn the compost pile every week to mix the material and break down the organic matter. Water the pile occasionally to keep moist, but not wet.
7. Measure and record (at schools) the temperature of the compost pile with a soil or food thermometer.
MATERIALS: wood or fence materials, yard and kitchen waste, thermometer, pitch fork.
MODIFICATIONS/ ACCOMODATIONS: Work as a group. Allow students to assist one another. Divide up the tasks so everyone may take a turn.
