PARTS OF A PLANT

LESSON 5: Parts of plants and their functions.

OUTCOME:  Students will learn to identify the various parts of a plant and their functions.

CONDITIONS:  This lesson should consume one class period.

ACTIVITIES:  Teachers and students…

PROCEDURE:

1. Students select a flower to draw on a blank piece of paper.  They may look at magazines, posters, calendars, etc… for ideas, but they may not copy it directly.  Make sure students draw the entire flower.

2.  Students then label their flowers including, but not limited to, the following parts;

FLOWER
LEAVES
FRUIT
SEED
STEM
ROOTS

3. Students then write out the various functions of these plant parts on the back of the piece of paper.

MATERIALS:  paper, pictures, pencils, horticultural textbook.

MODIFICATIONS/ACCOMODATIONS: None.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Access Lifeskills Rubric for accuracy, completion, and creativity.

STANDARDS:  Life Science grades 9/10.
