By Mary LaBerge & Cheri Isaac

LESSON 2: Testing results of fertilizer.

OUTCOME:  Students will determine the significance of the use of fertilizer on their plants.

CONDITIONS:  This lesson will take place over the period of six weeks.

ACTIVITIES:  Teacher and students…

1. Each student in class picks out 2 of the same type of plants, which are the same size and condition.  These plants are clearly labeled plant 1 and plant 2.
2. All students will apply once a week a dose of general 5-5-5 fertilizer to plant #1 only.  Plant #2 will receive water only.  Plant #2 is being used as a “control” or check plant.
3. Weekly, students will measure and record the condition and size of each plant.
4. At the end of the six-week testing period students will share with the class their records, which note the differences of the plants’ growth habits.
5. If significant, a conclusion, and therefore a generalization shall be made about the usefulness of fertilizing plants.

MATERIALS:  plants, charts, fertilizer, water, rulers.

MODIFICATIONS/ACCOMODATIONS: Ask students to hypothesize what they think the results of their inquiry will be.  Students work as individuals.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: Life Skills Rubric for accuracy and completion.

STANDARDS:  Life Science grades 9/10.
