LESSON 3: JOB OPPORTUNITIES IN THE HEALTH FIELD

OUTCOME: Each student will be given a list of health careers and told to do a research on a career of interest to them. They will be encouraged to conduct an interview with someone in the health profession. This experience will help to expose and prepare them for the future.

CONDITIONS: This lesson will require 2 class periods.

ACTIVITIES

TEACHER:

-Will write a list of health careers on the board. Examples are Doctor, Nurses, Radiologist, Respiratory therapist laboratory technician, Sonographers, medical assistant, etc.

-Pair up students to discuss at least 2 health careers.

STUDENTS:

-Choose 2 careers of interest and discuss the pre-requisites, academic subjects you need to focus on in middle and high school.

-Level of education needed in order to be eligible for the job.

-Salary and benefits for the job

MATERIALS: A brochure on health careers, college brochures on courses relating to health careers.

MODIFICATIONS/ACCOMMODATIONS:

Invite guest speakers to do a presentation on health careers. Students will interview health care workers who are working in areas of interest to them.

METHOD OF ASSESSMENT:  Academic rubric and life skills rubric. Acquisition of information and application of information.

STANDARDS: Careers in the health field. Grades 8-12.
