NAME OF LESSON: Transit Vehicle Electronic Technician
OBJECTIVE: The students will gain an understanding of jobs performed by Transit Vehicle Electronic Technicians by visiting the BART Rolling Stock and Shops in Richmond at 1281 Visalia Ave. at Rumrill Ave.
CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES: The teacher will provide background information on this position by discussing the scope of the job, the minimum qualifications and requirements, essential job functions, and information regarding the application and selection process. The teacher will then explain details as to the location and operation of this facility and related safety information. After students visit, ask questions and observe these technicians performing their job, students will write a one-page summary of the field trip. The summary will include what they observed, what they learned, if they would want to work in this type of job, what they liked best about the field trip and other pertinent information to be determined by the teacher.
CONDITIONS: The teacher must first call the manager or supervisor of this facility prior to the trip. Next, the teacher must secure transportation to this shop. Also, permission slips must be distributed and collected prior to the field trip. If the students ride BART, the students can observe the Station Agents and the Train Operators discussed in lessons one and two. The morning or day before the trip, the teacher should discuss the information above and the afternoon or day after the trip the students should write their summary/evaluations. The students and/or teacher should send follow-up letter(s) thanking the shop employees for their time and trouble.
MATERIALS: Mode of transportation (i.e. cars, bus, BART,
etc.) must be provided. Pencils and paper are necessary for the summary/evaluations.
Materials will be required
for the follow-up letters.
METHOD OF ASSESSMENT: The primary method of assessment will be if the students attend the field trip and pay attention to the information presented by the BART employees at the shop. Next, the summary/evaluations can be used to assess the students and provide feedback for the next trip to BART or elsewhere.
MODIFICATIONS/ACCOMMODATIONS: Students with physical impairments will be provided with the necessary equipment needed to take this trip (e.g. wheelchairs). Those students who have learning or other handicaps can receive assistance with the summary/evaluations at the conclusion of the field trip.
STANDARDS ADDRESSED: The English/Language Arts Standards addressed include listening and writing as well as the auxiliary skills as following instructions, asking questions and various observation and communication skills.
